South Africa Garden Route in 10 Days

This route starts in Cape Town with penguins at Boulders Beach, winding coastal kilometers on the Chapmans Peak Drive and the rich green of Kirstenbosch. Then it draws you on over vineyards, cliff paths and lagoons into the expanse of Addo, where the landscape feels completely different once more. Each day has a clear focus but enough variety so the trip never turns uniform.

What is special about this stretch is the mix of city, coast, nature and animal experiences in a small space. You switch between urban quarters, viewpoints, beaches, hiking trails and reserves, ideal if you want to see a lot in ten days without just rushing from place to place.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is ideal for you if you like road trips and love days made up of several very different moments. It suits active travelers with a feel for landscape, small cultural stops and wildlife watching, without every stage having to become a big hike.

What to expect

Expect a varied rhythm of drives, short walks, viewpoints and a few longer nature moments. Some days are densely packed, others feel more relaxed, especially in the coastal places and the wine regions.

Day 1 · Cape Town

Penguins, curves, Cape Town

The opening feels like a great journey right away: at Boulders Beach you meet the famous penguins and are straight in the middle of the coastal landscape. Then the Chapmans Peak Drive takes you onto one of the region's most impressive roads, with views that make you slow down automatically. In Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden it turns green, wide and calm, a strong contrast to the morning's ocean.

Day 2 · Cape Town

Forest, colors, Cape point

The day begins in Newlands Forest, pleasantly shady and a bit quieter than you might expect of Cape Town. In Bo-Kaap you then switch to a quarter full of color, narrow streets and striking facades. Later the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway takes you up and on to the Cape of Good Hope, where the landscape turns open, windy and dramatic again.

Day 3 · Cape Town

Beach and city edge

Camps Bay Beach brings you bright light, a wide beach backdrop and the feeling that the city here almost seamlessly turns into the coast. From Signal Hill you then look at Cape Town from a completely different perspective and get a good sense of its setting between water and mountains. To close, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront fits perfectly: lively, right by the harbor and a pleasant place to let the day wind down.

Day 4 · Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch between art and vines

With the Spier Hotel the switch to the Winelands begins, where everything feels a bit more ordered, calmer and more spacious. In the Rupert Museum a cultural accent follows, before you feel historic Stellenbosch on Dorp Street between Cape Dutch architecture and old trees. Later Tokara Wine Estate and Delaire Graff Estate add panorama and wine landscape on top once more.

Day 5 · Hermanus

Cliff paths in Hermanus

In Hermanus the Cliff Path leads you straight to the coast, with a constant view of the water and of the rocks below you. Gearing's Point and the Old Harbour Museum then give the place a maritime, down-to-earth side that fits the rough coastal picture well. If you then also switch to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, the sea day gains a piece of nature day with a wide view into the hinterland.

Day 6 · Knysna

Lagoon and great views

The day near Knysna starts impressively at the Knysna Elephant Park, where the encounter with the animals sticks at once. Then the SANP Garden Of Eden feels almost like a counter-design: green, dense and pleasantly decelerated. With The Heads and the Featherbed Nature Reserve the day ends large-format again, water, rock and that striking opening of the lagoon toward the sea.

Day 7 · Knysna

Beaches and Knysna flair

Buffalo Bay Beach brings breadth and sea air, without much distraction around, ideal for a relaxed start. In Brenton-on-Sea the coastal feeling remains, just with a slightly different perspective on beach and rocks. Later the Knysna Waterfront sets a livelier endpoint, when after nature and open views you arrive back in the middle of the place.

Day 8 · Plettenberg Bay

Robberg and river landscape

With the Robberg Nature Reserve the day begins spectacularly: a peninsula, paths by the sea and constantly changing views make this section special. Then Central Beach feels distinctly more relaxed, with more of a classic beach feeling and room to breathe. To close, the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve brings another landscape into play, quieter, greener and shaped by the river.

Day 9 · Plettenberg Bay

Animals around Plettenberg Bay

Today everything centers on wildlife watching, beginning in the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve with an open, wide bushland feeling. Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary then puts the focus closer and more directly on individual animals and their presence. With Monkeyland and Birds of Eden the day turns lively and dense once more, because you experience two quite different habitats back to back.

Day 10 · Addo

Finale in Addo

On the way to Addo, the Nanaga Farmstall is a striking stop before the landscape turns drier and more open. In the Addo Elephant Main Camp and the Addo Elephant National Park everything then revolves around the safari feeling, around sightings and reading the surroundings attentively. Zuurberg Mountain Village sets a scenic contrast to it and gives the last day height and breadth once more.
