Cape Town in 6 Days

This route shows you Cape Town from many angles: steep paths with wide views, green gardens at the foot of the mountain, relaxed parks, markets full of chatter and quarters with a clear history of their own. Sometimes you are right in the middle of stalls and streets, sometimes briefly out of the city between trees, fynbos and vineyards. This creates a travel feeling that is at once urban and surprisingly close to nature.

What is special about this tour is the shift of moods. The city's iconic places are followed by quieter corners, and at the end Stellenbosch opens up a whole different chapter with historic streets, a botanical garden and wine estates against a mountain backdrop.

Day 1 · Cape Town

Arriving between mountain and garden

To open, at the Platteklip Gorge Starting Point you head straight into the dramatic mountain backdrop and immediately feel how close Cape Town's nature lies to the city. Then Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden feels like a soft contrast: wide lawns, curving paths and plant worlds with lots of calm in between. Later it turns shadier and quieter in Newlands Forest, almost like a brief change of scenery within the same day.

Day 2 · Cape Town

Coast, view, stadium sight

The day begins easygoing in the Mojo Market, where you pick up the city's urban, relaxed pace right away. Then you are drawn up to Signal Hill, where sea, city and mountain come together in a single panorama. In Green Point Park the mood turns down to earth and green again, before the DHL Stadium shows the modern side of the quarter as a striking finish.

Day 3 · Cape Town

History and colorful streets

With De Waal Park you start the day calmly, before the history of Cape Town becomes tangible and personal in the District Six Museum. Then Greenmarket Square brings movement back in: open squares, market atmosphere and the feeling of standing right in daily life. In Bo-Kaap the day ends with steep streets, bold facades and a quarter that sticks in the memory at once.

Day 4 · Cape Town

Harbor edge and strong perspectives

At the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront you are close to the water, between promenades, harbor views and the constant coming and going. In the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa the focus then shifts to architecture and contemporary art, clear, edgy and surprising. Then the day gains a more reflective depth at The Nelson Mandela Gateway To Robben Island, before the V&A Waterfront brings the arc back into the lively cityscape.

Day 5 · Cape Town

Waterfront and gaining height

In the Two Oceans Aquarium the day begins with a change of perspective below the water's surface, calm and focused. Then the scenery rises again at The Cape Wheel above the roofs and paths of the Waterfront, Cape Town, with a wide view over the harbor area. To close, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway takes you all the way to the top and makes clear how spectacularly this city lies between sea and rock.

Day 6 · Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch between wine and mountains

With Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch starts wide, green and relaxed, a deliberate contrast to the city life of the past days. In Dorp Street and around the Village Museum it turns historic and pleasantly manageable, with a fine sense of proportions, facades and atmosphere. Later the landscape adds even more: in the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden it turns quieter, and at Lanzerac Wine Estate or with a view toward the Jonkershoekberge the region shows its open, mountain-near side once more.
