Reykjavik & Golden Circle in 5 Days

This trip feels like a quick shift between quiet coastal moments and grand natural scenery. You start in Reykjavík between harbour, history and the city lake, and soon after you're standing in front of steaming springs, thundering waterfalls and black lava fields. In between lie roads where something completely new waits around every bend.

What makes this route special is the mix of a compact capital and Iceland's most famous landscapes, without the days ever feeling overloaded. You see iconic places, but also quiet corners where the island reveals a rhythm all of its own.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is ideal for anyone who wants to see a lot of Iceland in a short time: city, nature and striking landscapes in one clear sequence. It suits travellers who like being on the move, love viewpoints and would rather experience things than linger long in one place.

What to expect

Expect a varied mix of city walks, short stops and longer driving days full of impressions. The paths on site are mostly easy, often short walks to viewpoints, waterfalls or lookout spots. The pace is lively but never rushed, as long as you start early and let each day find its own rhythm.

Day 1 · Reykjavík

Arriving between coast and history

To start, you head out to the Grótta Island Lighthouse, where Reykjavík suddenly feels far away and sea, wind and light set the tone. Back in the city, The Settlement Exhibition takes you straight to the beginnings of Iceland's settlement, a striking contrast to the open coastal views of the morning. At Tjörnin things then slow down: ducks on the water, bright facades along the shore and that relaxed city feeling that makes Reykjavík instantly likeable.

Day 2 · Reykjavík

Reykjavík from new perspectives

Perlan gives you the overview right at the start: from above the city you can see how closely sea, mountains and neighbourhoods sit together here. You then move on to Hallgrimskirkja, whose clean lines impress from the outside alone and cast Reykjavík in yet another light. The day ends modern and glassy at the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, with shifting reflections of sky, water and city.

Day 3 · Selfoss

Golden Circle at full force

The day starts powerfully with Gullfoss Waterfall: water, spray and rock collide here so massively that you stop in your tracks. You continue to Geysir and then to Strokkur Geyser, where the landscape doesn't just simmer but bursts into motion in regular eruptions. To finish, Thingvellir National Park brings a completely different scale into play, wide, silent and geologically impressive.

Day 4 · Vik

Waterfalls and black coastline

Dyrhólaey opens the day with sweeping views over the south coast, where cliffs, sea and black beaches meet in clean lines. Then it gets quieter and more hidden at Kvernufoss, before Skógafoss takes over again with full width and force. Later, Seljalandsfoss shows yet another side of this region's waterfalls: open, elegant and with plenty of space all around.

Day 5 · Grindavik

Fire, steam and the Atlantic

The Blue Lagoon is a gentle start to a day that still feels raw and volcanic. At Gunnuhver Hot Springs you notice how close the geothermal energy pushes to the surface here, loud, steaming and utterly unrestrained. At the Reykjanes Lighthouse and the Bridge Between Continents the trip ends with wide views and a landscape that feels more like the edge of another world than the end of a road trip.
