Sri Lanka in 10 Days
This route takes you through very different landscapes and moods: dry plains around Sigiriya, green hills near Kandy, cool heights in Ella and finally the south coast with fort walls, bays and long beach evenings. You climb up to viewpoints, walk through temple complexes, drive on between tea mountains and end up where sand and the Indian Ocean set the pace. Each day has a clear focus without the trip ever turning monotonous.
What is special about this tour is the dense sequence of nature, history and everyday scenes in a small space. You experience famous highlights but also quieter places that give the trip depth and balance the stages pleasantly.
Who is this trip for?
This trip is ideal for anyone who wants to see a lot of Sri Lanka in a relatively short time and finds nature, culture and beautiful views equally important. The pace is active but not rushed, good for travelers who like to start early, don't shy away from a few steps and see location changes as part of the experience.
What to expect
Expect several days with stairs, short hikes and viewpoints, and in between more relaxed hours in gardens, temples and on the coast. The route mixes archaeological sites, national park, highlands and beach very evenly; the drives connect these contrasts and give the trip its rhythm.
Day 1 · Sigiriya
Rocks above Sigiriya
To open, it first goes into the quiet green of the Ritigala Strict Natural Reserve, where the landscape immediately shows a calmer, almost concentrated side of Sri Lanka. Then Pidurangala Rock offers a first great view over the plain and onto the striking monolith of Sigiriya. In Sigiriya itself you then feel why this place belongs among the island's defining images: stone, history and expanse mesh directly here.

Nature and cave sanctuary
The day begins with open landscape in the Minneriya National Park, where the surroundings feel distinctly wider and wilder than the day before. At the Sigiriya viewpoint you get that iconic perspective of the rock once more, this time with some distance and calm. Later the Dambulla Cave Temple sets a very different accent: instead of panorama, now rock chambers, murals and an atmosphere that lingers for a long time.

Gardens and mountain temples
In the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya you start the day among old trees, wide lawns and tropical plant abundance. Then the route continues to the Gadaladeniya Raja maha viharaya, where architecture and location already work on their own. With the Sri Lankathilake Rajamaha Viharaya it turns especially impressive once more, because the temple fits so naturally into the hilly surroundings.

Kandy between lake and tea
At the Kandy Viewpoint the city first lies at your feet, with hills all around and the lake as a calm center. Around Kandy Lake the mood then changes at once: less distance, more city life, more movement. In the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy finally becomes very concretely tangible as a religious and historic center.

Highlands with wide views
With Lipton's Seat the day begins up in the tea mountains, where the landscape lies fanned out wide before you and the morning feels especially clear. The Dowa Ancient Rock Temple then brings a quieter contrast set into the rock. Later you are drawn to the Ella Rock Trailhead, where Ella shows its active, view-rich side once more.

Bridges, loop and tea
At the Little adam's peak View Point you quickly notice why Ella is so valued for its open mountain panoramas. Then the Nine Arch Bridge follows, one of the region's best-known motifs, which comes into its own especially beautifully between forest and slopes. At the View Point - Demodara Railway Loop landscape then turns into movement: here you see how track and terrain interlock in a fascinating way.

South coast with fort view
The transition to the coast begins quietly in the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, where you get closer to the everyday life and culture of the region. Then the day opens toward sea, warmth and relaxed coastal rhythm at Unawatuna Beach. From the Japanese Peace Pagoda - Rumassala everything feels wider once more: bay, jungle and ocean suddenly lie in a single view.

Galle behind walls
In the Galle Dutch Fort you walk through a quarter where history is not locked away in a museum but lives on in the streets and between the walls. The Dutch Reformed Church sets a quiet, clear counterpoint to it. At the Flag Rock Bastion the day ends with wind, sea and the feeling that Galle shows its best side exactly between town and coast.

Tea and beaches
The day starts at the Handunugoda Tea Estate with a look at another facet of the south, before heading back toward the coast. At Midigama Beach the scenery turns more laid-back and open, with lots of horizon and a typical beach mood. Weligama Beach then feels even more expansive and lively, a good place to simply watch the water and the goings-on for a while.

Mirissa, all relaxed
Polhena Beach and Madiha Beach give the last travel day a calm, uncomplicated start on the coast. With Coconut Tree Hill a viewpoint is added that brings sea, palms and light together especially clearly. To close, Mirissa Beach is exactly the right place to let the trip wind down slowly, with sand underfoot and the feeling of carrying many very different images of Sri Lanka in your head.
