Madrid in 4 Days
This route takes you through Madrid with sweeping views, big art moments and plenty of city feeling on foot. You start among historic landmarks, then dive into squares, museums and green avenues, and finish with Toledo, a dense contrast of hills, stone and history. Each day has a clear focus without ever feeling rushed.
What makes this trip special is the mix of capital city and day trip: first Madrid's royal axes, then art and parkland, and finally Toledo with its viewpoints and monumental buildings. In a short time you get very different pictures of central Spain.

This trip is ideal for anyone who likes to explore cities on foot and wants to truly experience culture rather than just tick it off. It suits you if you enjoy architecture, museums, viewpoints and historic atmosphere, but don't need an overloaded programme.
What to expect
Expect well-filled days with a lot of walking, especially in the old-town areas of Madrid and Toledo. The route mixes open squares, grand interiors and quiet park sections, so intense sightseeing and more relaxed stretches alternate pleasantly.
Day 1 · Madrid
Opening with royal perspectives
The first day begins at the Temple of Debod, where Madrid feels surprisingly wide and open. From there you walk on to the Royal Palace of Madrid, whose massive presence sets the tone for the day, before the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena right next door offers an intriguing architectural shift. Later, things become quieter and more rounded in the Royal Basilica of Saint Francis the Great, a fine close to this historic opening.

Squares and great art
Today Madrid first shows itself on its classic city squares: the Plaza Mayor feels enclosed and theatrical, the Puerta del Sol afterwards noticeably faster and more urban. Then you switch from street life to the collection halls of the Museo Nacional del Prado, where the day gains real depth. In the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía the view turns more modern and edgy.

Green, glass and city axes
The day starts in the Real Jardín Botánico, where the pace immediately slows and the noise of the city briefly fades into the background. The path then leads to the Palacio de Cristal, whose light structure in the middle of the greenery creates a contrast all of its own. El Retiro Park gives you room to breathe, before the Puerta de Alcalá rounds off the day with a striking city gate and a clear urban backdrop.

Day trip to Toledo
In Toledo everything begins at the Mirador del Valle: from here the city lies before you like a compact panorama, and you instantly understand its remarkable setting. Then you head in to the Alcázar de Toledo and on to the Catedral Primada de Toledo, where monumentality feels quite different from Madrid. Towards the end the walk becomes quieter and almost labyrinthine as you experience the Sinagoga de Santa María La Blanca and the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, before San Martin's Bridge sets a strong final note.
