Expect plenty of cobblestones, climbs and stairs, especially in the older quarters and in Sintra. The route mixes short rides with longer walks and relies on a good rhythm of views, history and moments to pause in between.
Day 1 · Lisbon
Arriving among the hills
To start, you hop on Tram 28 and immediately get a feel for Lisbon's tight bends, steep streets and densely built quarters. Then it's up to the Castelo de São Jorge, where the city spreads out beneath you in every direction. Later, the Santa Justa Lift lets you switch perspective once more and see how closely the old town and the lower town huddle together here.

Alfama and its views
The morning begins at the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, while Lisbon still lies wide and quiet before you. From there you dive into Alfama, wander through narrow alleys and sense how the quarter reveals itself in steps rather than streets. At the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, one of those views awaits that automatically makes you slow down.

From the centre upwards
You start with the Lisbon Cathedral, a place that makes Lisbon's long history directly tangible. Then the city opens up at the Rua Augusta Arch towards the river and the grand squares. On the Praça do Comércio everything feels wide and bright, before you gain some distance again in the Jardim do Torel and look back on the day from above.

Sintra full of contrasts
In Sintra, the National Palace of Pena sets a colourful, almost unreal opening note above the wooded hills. Then the paths take you to The Moorish Castle, where walls and views feel noticeably rougher and more primal. Later, things turn more mysterious again at the Quinta da Regaleira, especially around the Initiation Well, which gives the day an idiosyncratic, almost subterranean finale.
