Northern Italy in 10 Days
This trip takes you through a Northern Italy full of contrasts: canals and churches in Milan, stone old towns above the hills, lakeside paths on Lake Garda and, at the end, the grand finale in Venice. You walk through silent cloisters, across wide squares and along the water, each time with a different view of the region. Sometimes urban and dense, sometimes light and open, but never arbitrary.
What makes this route special is the alternation of great cultural sites and relaxed lake days. Between Milan, Bergamo, Sirmione, Malcesine, Verona, Bologna and Venice, a journey takes shape that shows a lot without ever feeling like ticking boxes.
Who is this trip for?
This route is ideal for anyone who loves cities, history and beautiful walks, but also needs water, views and quieter hours in between. If you'd rather collect atmosphere than just race through sights, this pace will suit you very well.
What to expect
Expect plenty of walking, stairways in old towns and a rhythm of intense cultural days and easygoing stretches on Lake Garda. The mix is varied: historic highlights often in the morning, then squares, parks or lakeside promenades to catch your breath.
Day 1 · Milan
Milan between canals and walls
To start, Milan shows you its laid-back side along the Navigli, where water, bridges and house fronts immediately set a different pace. Things grow quieter in the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, whose clear forms and ancient walls radiate a powerful calm. In Parco Sempione the city opens up wide once more, before the day ends on a striking note at Sforzesco Castle with its massive profile.

Art, stage, mighty cathedral
The day begins unusually at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, where paths, sculptures and tombs feel almost like an open-air museum. In the Pinacoteca di Brera things turn focused and classical, before elegant Milan becomes tangible around the Teatro alla Scala. For the finale, the Milan Cathedral draws you onto its square almost automatically: monumental, detailed and exactly right as the high point of the day.

Bergamo's upper town
In Bergamo you climb up to the Rocca di Bergamo, where the view instantly explains why this city sits so remarkably. Then you dive into the Città Alta, with lanes, arches and stone facades that feel discovered rather than visited. On Piazza Vecchia and at the Campanone, everything that defines Bergamo condenses: compact, historic and full of presence.

Sirmione by the water
After the cities of the first days, Sirmione brings you straight to the shore, starting with the open, calm mood at Punta Grò. Later it gets more central and lively around the Castello Scaligero di Sirmione, which acts like a gateway into the old town. At Spiaggia del Prete and along the Passeggiata delle Muse the day winds down gently, with lake views, light and plenty of room to just look.

Day 5 · Sirmione, Province of Brescia, Italy
Ruins, beach, views
Today Sirmione shows its bright, almost Mediterranean side at Jamaica Beach, where rocks, water and shoreline set the tone. With the Grotte di Catullo e Museo Archeologico di Sirmione you then step into a far older era, without ever quite losing sight of the lake. From the Lido delle Bionde to Parco Maria Callas, the day stays relaxed and full of views.

Day 6 · Malcesine
Malcesine and Monte Baldo
In Malcesine you head up high first: Monte Baldo brings space, air and a view of Lake Garda that suddenly shows the landscape as a whole. Back down, things get more compact with Spiaggia Paina and the Castello Scaligero di Malcesine, close to the water yet clearly shaped by history. At the Palazzo dei Capitani and towards Località Val di Sogno the day fades out quietly by the lake.

Day 7 · Verona
Verona in stone and squares
Verona begins with the Church of Saint Zeno, which immediately gives you a feel for the city's older, quieter face. In the Castelvecchio Museum the blend of fortress and art becomes tangible, before the Arena di Verona suddenly lifts everything onto the big stage. Later you're drawn to Piazza delle Erbe, where Verona feels lively, dense and thoroughly present.

Verona's quiet corners
The day starts green and orderly with the Giusti Garden, a counterpoint to the busy squares of the day before. At the Teatro Romano and the Ponte Pietra, Verona shows its layers at their finest: antiquity, river and stone interlock here as if it were the most natural thing. On Piazza dei Signori it turns elegant once more, before the Casa di Giulietta closes the day with one of the city's most famous images.

Bologna beneath the arcades
Bologna welcomes you with the Basilica Santuario Santo Stefano - Complesso delle Sette Chiese, where courtyards, rooms and passageways feel almost like a small city within the city. Then The Two Towers: Garisenda & Asinelli pull your gaze upwards and give the centre its unmistakable silhouette. In the Quadrilatero, at the Archiginnasio Municipal Library and finally on Piazza Maggiore, Bologna reveals itself as dense, learned and yet entirely everyday.

Finale in Venice
To finish, the Grand Canal carries you straight into a city that moves differently from all the others from the very first moment. At the Ponte di Rialto the water becomes a stage, before the great Venetian backdrop opens up on Piazza San Marco. With Saint Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs, the journey ends where architecture, power and lagoon light come together most impressively.
