Costa Rica in 12 Days
This route takes you from the capital straight into the Costa Rica you want to see, hear and smell: market stalls, rainforest paths, hanging bridges, cloud forest and, at the end, the Pacific. You switch between city and nature, between quiet museum rooms and paths where something is always rustling somewhere. Sometimes you stand before pre-Columbian treasures, sometimes before a volcano, sometimes with your feet in warm water. So the trip gradually feels bigger than the map suggests.
What is special about this stretch is the clear rhythm: first culture in San José, then the green stage around La Fortuna, after that cool Monteverde and finally Quepos with rainforest and sea. The days are varied but logically built, so you experience a lot without constantly having to arrive somewhere new.

This trip is ideal for you if you want to experience nature very closely but also seek a feel for the country's history and everyday life. It suits active city travelers, wildlife watchers and anyone who would rather be out on trails, hanging bridges and at viewpoints than just driving from highlight to highlight.
What to expect
Expect many short to medium paths, plus a few longer nature trails, stairs at waterfalls and partly damp, warm conditions. The mix is balanced: a city start, several nature days with wildlife watching and views, then for the finale beach, rainforest and a relaxed coastal feeling.
Day 1 · San José
San José between market and museums
To open, you dive straight into the capital's everyday life in the San José Central Market: narrow, lively and full of smells. Then it turns classic in the National Theater of Costa Rica, where the city suddenly shows its elegant side. In the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum you see how deep the country's history reaches, before you move on through San José with a completely different eye.

Hanging bridges and volcano views
Around Lake Arenal the landscape opens wide, and the drive alone makes clear that nature plays the leading role here. On the Puentes Colgantes Arenal you walk at eye level with the forest and get a good sense of the rainforest's different layers. Then the paths at Arenal Volcano View and Lava Trails lead closer to the volcanic backdrop, rougher and more open than in the morning.

Wildlife and adrenaline kick
The day starts with wildlife watching in the Proyecto Asis, where you experience Costa Rica's fauna up close. In the Ecocentro Danaus it turns quieter and greener, ideal for looking more carefully and noticing the small movements in the undergrowth. With El Salto (Rope Swing) the mood then shifts abruptly: from focused watching straight into refreshing adventure.

Day 4 · La Fortuna
Action and hot springs
In the Go Adventure Arenal Park the day begins with movement and views, just right if you want to savor La Fortuna's energy. Then Kalambu Hot Springs is the pleasant counterpole: warm water, a relaxed atmosphere and time to let the morning settle. Later it turns quiet again on the Sloth Watching Trail La Fortuna, when you look upward and read the forest with more patience.

Day 5 · La Fortuna
Waterfall and sloth search
At the Fortuna Waterfall it first goes down, step by step, until the roar drowns out everything else. On the Bogarin Trail this turns into a completely different nature moment: slower, more attentive and often with a view into the treetops. In the Parque de La Fortuna the day winds down more relaxed, in the middle of town and yet still in that easygoing La Fortuna rhythm.

Monteverde in the cloud forest
In the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve you are in another world at once: cooler, denser and full of fine sounds. Reserva Curi Cancha complements this experience with open sightlines and especially good chances to watch animals deliberately. In the Children's Eternal Rain Forest Bajo del Tigre you feel once more how varied forest can be here, even on comparatively short paths.

Day 7 · Puntarenas Province, Monteverde, Costa Rica
Orchids, adventure, mist
The Jardín de Orquídeas Monteverde shows you right at the start how rich in detail nature here is when you take time for the small things. Then the mood shifts in the Selvatura Adventure Park: more movement, more height, more view into the forest. In La Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena it turns quieter again to close, with that misty Monteverde feeling that stays in your mind for a long time.

Frogs, roots, views
In the Frog Pond Ranario the day begins colorful and lively, with animals you more often hear than see in the forest. At the Ficus La Raiz trailhead a path then awaits that impresses through its massive root forms alone. The Mirador Valle Escondido Preserve finally brings you out to the view, where Monteverde unfolds wide and green once more.

Day 9 · Quepos
Waterfalls to Manuel Antonio
With the Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park the day starts powerfully, because here water is not just backdrop but the actual center of the experience. In the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Hacienda Barú the pace changes again, and you tune more to tracks, sounds and movements in the forest. In the Manuel Antonio National Park you then already clearly notice the nearness of the coast: dense rainforest, but with that brighter, salty finale in the air.

Day 10 · Quepos
Rainforest and coastal view
Rainmaker takes you deep into the green, damp side of the region once more in the morning, with paths where something is always drawing your attention. On the Titi Canopy Tour - Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica pace comes in, and the forest shows itself from a completely different perspective. At the Marina Pez Vela the day turns more open and maritime, before you take the switch from jungle to coast quite naturally.

Day 11 · Quepos
Beach day near Quepos
At Espadilla Beach the day may deliberately be simpler: arrive, walk, look, swim, move on again. Playa Biesanz feels more sheltered and quieter, almost like a small retreat between the more active nature days. With Biesanz Beach the pace stays low, and it is exactly that which makes this section so pleasant.

Day 12 · Quepos
Finale between forest and sea
In the Manuel Antonio Nature Reserve & Wildlife Refuge you gather once more, to close, everything that defines this trip: paths through lush green, wildlife watching and that constant interplay of shade and light. Then the Manuel Antonio Beach opens right onto the water, bright and relaxed after so many forest days. In Manuel Antonio the route ends just right: not abruptly, but with room to look, breathe and let it all resonate.
